How to Play
Item cards appear one at a time showing an everyday object with an emoji. Tap the correct bin - Solid, Liquid, or Gas - to sort each item. Solids hold their shape (rock, ice, book). Liquids flow and take the shape of their container (water, milk, honey). Gases spread out to fill their container (air, steam, oxygen).
The game has over 20 items covering all three categories. Correct sorts animate the card swooping into the bin. Wrong sorts return the card with a gentle correction. Score is based on first-attempt accuracy. A final screen shows your percentage correct.
What Kids Learn
States of matter is a foundational physical science concept taught in virtually every primary curriculum. Understanding that all matter exists as solid, liquid, or gas - and that the same substance (like water/ice/steam) can exist in different states - gives children a powerful explanatory framework for everyday phenomena.
The emphasis on everyday examples (milk is a liquid, bread is a solid, the air you breathe is a gas) grounds the abstract concept in children's lived experience. This prevents the common misconception that "matter" only refers to exotic lab substances rather than everything around us.
Tips for Parents
Cook together and point out state changes in action - water boiling into steam, butter melting from solid to liquid, ice cream freezing from liquid to solid. Ask "is that a solid, liquid, or gas now?" after each change. If your child asks about hard-to-classify things like jelly, toothpaste, or sand, celebrate the question - these are genuinely interesting edge cases that even scientists debate. Introducing the word "properties" to describe what makes each state different builds scientific vocabulary.
