How to Play
Sort by Size uses familiar objects - bears, cups, stars, blocks, and more - in three distinct sizes (small, medium, large) that must be sorted into matching bins or arranged in order. Two activity types alternate: Bin Sort (drag each object to its small, medium, or large bin) and Order Up (arrange a set of 4-5 objects in a line from smallest to largest, or vice versa).
Level 1 uses clearly different sizes with obvious visual distinctions. Level 2 reduces the size differences, requiring more careful visual comparison. Level 3 introduces four sizes (extra small, small, medium, large) and more objects per sorting task. A "Measurement Challenge" level pairs ordering activities with simple measurement: "Put these in order by height from shortest to tallest, then count the squares to measure each one."
What Kids Learn
Size sorting and ordering develops foundational measurement and comparison concepts. Before children can use rulers, scales, or measuring cups meaningfully, they must understand the concepts of more/less, bigger/smaller, and ordering - the qualitative dimension of measurement that underlies all quantitative measurement. Sort by Size builds these qualitative concepts through repeated, concrete, visual comparison.
The ordering activity specifically builds the concept of a size scale - a continuous dimension along which objects can be placed in relative positions. This concept of ordered scales is prerequisite for understanding number lines, thermometers, measurement scales, and eventually functions and coordinate systems. Children who have strong intuitions about size ordering are far better prepared for measurement instruction than those who have only sorted into discrete categories.
Tips for Parents
Real-world size sorting and ordering is endlessly available: stack books in order of height, arrange vegetables by size before cooking, sort shoes from smallest to largest, compare siblings' heights on a growth chart. The Russian nesting doll (Matryoshka) toy is a classic size-ordering toy that provides enormous satisfaction through its perfect fit - finding one if possible is highly recommended. Avoid correcting "wrong" orderings immediately; instead ask "Is this one bigger or smaller than that one?" and let your child self-correct through comparison. The thinking process is more valuable than the correct outcome.
