How to Play

Number Patterns shows a sequence of numbers with one or more blanks and asks children to identify the missing values. The sequence might count up by 2 (2, 4, 6, _, 10), count down by 5 (25, 20, _, 10, 5), or follow a more complex rule like adding an increasing amount (1, 2, 4, 7, _, 16). Type or tap the missing numbers to complete the sequence.

Four progression tracks build from simple to complex: Counting On/Back (sequences that add or subtract a constant number), Skip Counting (counting in 2s, 3s, 5s, 10s), Growing Patterns (sequences where the rule itself changes, like +1, +2, +3...), and Multiplication Sequences (sequences based on times tables: 3, 6, 9, 12...). A "Guess the Rule" mode challenges children to describe the pattern rule in words after completing it.

What Kids Learn

Number patterns are the gateway to algebraic thinking - the ability to express a relationship between quantities as a rule rather than just calculating individual values. When a child says "this pattern adds 3 each time," they are making a functional generalization: f(n) = f(n-1) + 3. This reasoning, practiced in a concrete, number-sequence context at ages 5-9, directly prepares children for formal function concepts in secondary school.

Skip counting sequences (counting in 2s, 3s, 5s) have the direct practical benefit of building multiplication table foundations. Children who have internalized the 3-times-table sequence through skip-counting games have a major advantage when formal multiplication is introduced - the products are already familiar as part of a sequence rather than isolated facts to memorize.

Tips for Parents

Play "What's My Rule?" in the car: call out the first three numbers of a sequence and challenge your child to name the rule and the next three numbers. Start with simple rules (counting in 5s) and progress to tricky ones (doubling each time). When your child is learning times tables at school, count through the relevant sequence together aloud regularly: "3, 6, 9, 12, 15..." This chanting builds the sequencing memory that supports recall of individual times table facts. Praise the process of figuring out the rule, not just getting the right answer - mathematical reasoning is more important than computational correctness.
