How to Play
Land, Sea & Air presents animal images one at a time and asks children to sort them into three habitat categories: Land (animals that live primarily on the ground), Sea (animals that live in the ocean or freshwater), and Air (animals that fly and live primarily in the skies). Drag each animal to the correct habitat card. Animals are sorted into levels by difficulty of classification.
Level 1 uses unambiguously categorized animals: lion (land), fish (sea), eagle (air). Level 2 introduces animals that cross habitats: a duck (land and water), a seal (sea and land), a flying fish (sea and air). Level 3 covers animals that are harder to classify: whales (sea mammals, not fish), bats (flying mammals, not birds), penguins (birds that don't fly), and amphibians. A "Habitat Explorer" feature shows each animal's full habitat after sorting, including diet, range, and fascinating adaptations.
What Kids Learn
Habitat classification introduces children to ecology - the study of where organisms live and why. Understanding that different environments support different life forms, and that each organism is adapted to its specific habitat, builds the conceptual foundation for understanding adaptation, natural selection, and biodiversity. This conceptual framework is foundational for secondary school biology and environmental science.
The Level 2 and 3 animals that cross or challenge categories are particularly educationally valuable: a duck that is both a land and water animal, a whale that is a mammal living in the sea, a penguin that is a bird unable to fly. These borderline cases teach children that biological categories are not rigid boxes but flexible frameworks, and that biological diversity includes many fascinating exceptions to general rules. This tolerance for complexity and ambiguity is a hallmark of mature scientific thinking.
Tips for Parents
Wildlife documentaries, zoo visits, and aquarium visits are the richest complements to this game, giving children vivid, emotional exposure to the animals they sort in the game. When an animal appears in any media context, ask your child to classify its habitat - making the game's framework into a general way of thinking about animals. For the borderline cases (ducks, seals, penguins), discuss together rather than immediately providing the answer: "Which habitat do you think a seal lives in mostly? Where does it sleep? Where does it find food? What do you decide?" This guided inquiry develops biological reasoning.
