How to Play
A set of organisms from a food chain appear shuffled in random order. Drag them (or tap and tap-to-place on mobile) into the correct sequence from the start of the food chain to the end. Each correct placement adds an animated arrow connecting the organisms.
The game features a six-step food chain moving from an energy source at the base through producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, and an apex predator at the top. Complete the chain correctly to advance. Wrong placements shake and return to the start pool. Score one point for each correctly completed chain.
What Kids Learn
Food chains are one of the most important organising concepts in ecology and are a standard topic in primary science curricula worldwide. Understanding that energy flows from producers (plants) through herbivores to carnivores - and that removing any link disrupts the whole chain - gives children a foundational model for understanding ecosystems, conservation, and even climate change.
The sorting mechanic reinforces directionality (the arrow always goes from eaten to eater) which prevents the common error of reversing the chain. Seeing the arrows appear as the chain is assembled makes the concept visually intuitive.
Tips for Parents
On walks in nature, try to spot food chains together - a caterpillar on a leaf, a bird that might eat it, a cat that might chase the bird. Ask "what would happen to the caterpillars if all the birds disappeared?" This "remove a link" thinking is the conceptual heart of ecology and children find it surprisingly profound. David Attenborough documentaries are a wonderful extension for curious children.
