How to Play

A 3x3 grid of cells fills the screen. The game lights up cells one at a time in a sequence, each glowing brightly for half a second. When the sequence is complete, the grid goes dark. Now it is your turn - tap the cells in the same order they lit up.

Get it right and the next level adds one more cell to the sequence. You have three lives. A wrong tap shows you the cells you missed before moving on. Complete as many levels as you can and try to beat your best level each time you play. The grid expands to 4x4 for very long sequences.

What Kids Learn

The memory grid task is one of the most well-researched assessments of visuospatial working memory in developmental psychology. Unlike the number-based memory tasks used in most educational apps, the grid format tests a different (and complementary) aspect of working memory - the spatial rather than verbal channel.

Children who regularly practise visuospatial memory tasks show improvements not just on those tasks but on related academic skills including geometry, mental arithmetic, and even reading comprehension. The grid game is also an excellent equaliser - children who find verbal tasks difficult often excel at spatial memory, boosting their confidence.

Tips for Parents

Play a low-tech version using cups turned upside down. Hide a coin under one cup, move the cups around, and ask your child to find the coin - start simple and add more cups as they improve. This connects the digital skill to physical space and gets children moving. After a few sessions of Memory Grid, try asking your child to describe their strategy - "do you see the pattern as a shape or remember it as a list of positions?" Either strategy is valid and discussing it deepens the learning.
