How to Play

Word Builder presents three columns on screen: Prefixes (on the left), Root Words (in the middle), and Suffixes (on the right). Drag and combine pieces to build a real word, then tap "Build!" to check your answer. The game shows you whether the combination is valid and, if so, displays the word's meaning. Try to build as many valid words as possible from a given set of components.

The game is structured in sets: Set 1 covers common suffixes only (-s, -ing, -ed, -er), Set 2 adds common prefixes (un-, re-, pre-), Set 3 introduces Greek and Latin roots (bio-, geo-, -graph, -ology), and Set 4 challenges players to build multi-component words (bio + logy, pre + dict + ion). A "Word Family Tree" visualization shows how a single root generates dozens of related words.

What Kids Learn

Morphological awareness - understanding how words are built from meaningful parts - is a powerful reading and vocabulary development tool that is often underemphasized in primary education. A child who understands that "un-" means "not" and "-ful" means "full of" can deduce the meanings of "unsuccessful," "ungrateful," and "unforgiving" without ever having seen those words before.

The Greek and Latin roots in Set 3 are particularly high-value: a single root like "-graph" (meaning "write") unlocks "photograph," "biography," "geography," "autograph," and "paragraph" simultaneously. Research in vocabulary acquisition suggests that morphological strategy is the most efficient way to expand vocabulary in the upper primary years, making Word Builder's approach especially well-timed for its age range.

Tips for Parents

When your child encounters an unfamiliar word in reading, help them break it apart: "Can you find a prefix? A suffix? What do you think the root means?" This active morphological analysis - sometimes called "word detective" work - is a skill that builds rapidly with practice and pays dividends throughout school. Look at professional vocabulary like "biology," "geology," "psychology" together and see how many word parts your child can identify. The discovery that adult vocabulary is built from familiar parts is genuinely exciting for children with strong morphological awareness.
