How to Play

Vowel Hunter presents words with all their letters displayed, and the child must tap every vowel in the word. For example, in the word RABBIT, the correct taps are the A and the I. Correct vowels glow gold when tapped; tapping a consonant deducts a point. Each word has a picture clue and the word is read aloud to support pre-readers.

The game progresses through four stages: Short Vowels (words with simple CVC patterns like CAT, HIT, TOP), Long Vowels (words with vowel-consonant-e patterns like CAKE and BITE), Vowel Teams (words where two vowels work together, like RAIN and BOAT), and the Challenge Stage (longer words with multiple syllables where children find all vowels in sequence). A "Vowel Song" bonus clip plays when a child identifies all five vowels - reinforcing their names and sounds through music.

What Kids Learn

Vowels are the most complex and irregular aspect of English orthography - and also the most important, because every syllable must contain a vowel. Children who can confidently identify and distinguish vowel letters from consonants have a crucial structural understanding of how words are built that accelerates both decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling).

The progression from short vowels to vowel teams mirrors the sequence used in structured literacy programs like Orton-Gillingham, ensuring the game's difficulty arc aligns with how phonics is taught in schools. The vowel-teams stage is particularly important: understanding that two vowels can work together as a unit (AI, OA, EA) is prerequisite knowledge for reading a huge proportion of English words correctly.

Tips for Parents

Vowels are everywhere - look for them on cereal boxes, road signs, and book titles. Ask your child to count the vowels in words they see throughout the day: "How many vowels in the word STOP?" or "Quick - what are the vowels in ELEPHANT?" This informal, opportunistic practice complements the structured game practice and builds the habit of attending to letter patterns in everyday text. For children who confuse vowels and consonants, the simple rule "A, E, I, O, U - all the other letters are consonants" is worth repeating and reviewing regularly until it's completely automatic.
