How to Play
Sentence Builder presents a set of word tiles - all the words of a sentence, but in random order - and asks children to drag them into the correct sequence. For example: [the] [sat] [mat] [on] [cat] [the] → "The cat sat on the mat." Word tiles are color-coded by part of speech: blue for nouns, red for verbs, green for adjectives, yellow for prepositions, helping children see the grammatical structure of the sentence.
Level 1 uses simple 3-5 word sentences. Level 2 uses 6-8 word sentences including adjectives and adverbs. Level 3 uses 8-12 word compound sentences. Level 4 introduces complex sentences with subordinate clauses. A "Build Your Own" mode lets children drag words from a word bank to write their own sentences, which are then checked for grammatical correctness. The game accepts multiple valid orderings where English allows different sentence structures.
What Kids Learn
Sentence construction develops grammatical awareness - the intuitive understanding of how English sentences are structured that is essential for both reading comprehension and writing. The color-coding by part of speech makes syntactic structure visible: children can see that sentences follow predictable patterns (noun phrase + verb phrase, subject + predicate) and that certain types of words appear in certain positions.
Accepting multiple valid orderings (e.g., "The dog chases the ball" and "The ball is chased by the dog" are both correct) introduces the concept of voice and sentence variation - tools that make writing more varied and interesting. This meta-linguistic awareness (thinking about how language works, not just using it) is strongly associated with advanced literacy, vocabulary development, and writing quality. Children with strong grammatical awareness are significantly better writers than those without it.
Tips for Parents
Read sentences from books together and discuss their structure: "What is this sentence about? What is happening? Who is doing it?" These simple comprehension questions build the habit of parsing sentence structure. When your child writes, encourage revision for variety: "You used three sentences starting with 'I' in a row - how could you change one of them?" This gentle attention to sentence structure builds the craft-awareness that distinguishes good writers from competent ones. Grammar rules are best learned through noticing patterns in real reading and writing rather than through abstract rules - keep all grammar discussions grounded in actual sentences.
