How to Play
Rhyming Words presents a target word with a picture and asks children to find all the words in a group that rhyme with it. For example: "CAT rhymes with... HAT, MAT, BAT - but not BUS." Tap all the rhyming words (there are usually two or three in each group) and avoid the non-rhyming distractors. A friendly voice reads every word aloud, so children can hear the rhyme even if they can't read the text.
Activities progress through three formats: Find the Rhyme (tap all rhyming words), Odd One Out (three rhyming words and one that doesn't belong - which is the odd one out?), and Rhyme Pairs (draw lines to connect word pairs that rhyme). Each format approaches the same phonological skill from a different angle, deepening the understanding. Complete three activities to earn a rhyme star.
What Kids Learn
Phonological awareness - the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate sounds in spoken language - is the strongest predictor of reading success in young children. Rhyming is the most accessible entry point to phonological awareness, because it requires children to focus on the ending sounds of words rather than meaning. This focus on sound patterns is the same cognitive skill needed to decode unfamiliar words using phonics.
Children who can identify and generate rhymes have demonstrated that they can "hear" the internal structure of words - specifically, that words can be broken into an onset (the beginning consonant or cluster) and a rime (the vowel + ending). This onset-rime awareness directly supports the ability to learn letter-sound correspondences and blend sounds into new words - the core phonics skills.
Tips for Parents
Rhyming is best practiced in a joyful, playful atmosphere - singing nursery rhymes, making up silly rhyming words, and reading Dr. Seuss books together are all excellent rhyming practice. After playing the game, try a "rhyme chain" at dinner: one person says a word, the next must rhyme it, and so on around the table until the chain breaks. Don't worry about invented words - "zat, bat, gat, nat" is perfectly good phonological practice. The more playful and silly the rhyming gets, the more engaged children will be.
