How to Play
Each round begins with a short passage of four to six sentences about an interesting topic - the Sun, penguins, the water cycle, bees, or ancient Egypt. A 20-second countdown timer appears below the passage. Read carefully, then the passage disappears and three multiple-choice questions appear one at a time.
A "I'm ready" button lets you dismiss the passage early if you feel confident. Each question has four options. Correct answers earn a point. After all three questions are answered, the next passage appears. The game has five passages and fifteen questions in total. Your final score appears as both a number and a percentage.
What Kids Learn
Reading comprehension is not simply decoding words - it is constructing meaning, retaining information, and answering questions that require both literal recall and basic inference. Reading Comprehension trains children to read actively with a purpose rather than passively letting words wash over them.
The passage-then-questions format mirrors exactly how children are assessed in school reading tests, making the game directly relevant to academic performance. The varied topics - science, geography, animals - also build background knowledge, which research shows is the single biggest predictor of reading comprehension ability in older children.
Tips for Parents
After the game, discuss one of the passages together and ask open-ended questions that go beyond what the game asked - for example, "why do you think bees are so important to us?" or "what would happen if there were no Sun?" This extension thinking develops inferential comprehension and makes the information personally meaningful. For struggling readers, allow them to re-read the passage or use the game without the 20-second time pressure by pressing "I'm ready" immediately.
