How to Play

Each round shows you a root word (like HAPPY) and a definition (like "not happy"). Three options appear - possible prefixes or suffixes. Click the correct one to attach it to the root word and form a new word that matches the definition.

As you hover or select an option, the complete word is previewed live on screen so you can see exactly what each choice would create. Correct selections animate the new word with a pop and display the completed definition. The game covers 12 rounds mixing prefixes (un-, re-, pre-, mis-, dis-) and suffixes (-ful, -less, -ness, -ly, -er).

What Kids Learn

Understanding prefixes and suffixes is one of the highest-leverage vocabulary strategies available to a growing reader. A child who knows that "un-" means "not" and "-less" means "without" can unlock the meaning of thousands of unfamiliar words they encounter in reading.

This morphological awareness - understanding how word parts combine to create meaning - also dramatically improves spelling, because many spelling patterns (like -ness and -ly) are consistent across huge numbers of words. Children who develop this skill typically show significantly larger vocabulary growth than peers who learn words only one at a time.

Tips for Parents

Start a "word collection" at home - whenever your child encounters an unfamiliar word, look for the prefix or suffix and try to work out the meaning together before checking a dictionary. This detective process is far more memorable than simply being told a definition. Ask questions like "if CARE means looking after something, what do you think CAREFUL means? And CARELESS?" Building the habit of morphological analysis pays dividends throughout a child's entire education.
