How to Play
Money Math puts your child in charge of a virtual coin purse. The game has three modes: Count the Coins (a pile of coins appears and you count the total value), Make the Amount (drag coins into the purse to reach a target amount using the fewest coins possible), and Make Change (a shopping scenario where you calculate the change due from a purchase). All three use realistic coin and note images.
The game covers penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and dollar denominations. Difficulty increases progressively: early levels use only pennies and nickels, while later levels mix all denominations and require change from $5 or $10 notes. Correct answers earn virtual "spending money" that unlocks bonus items in a fun virtual toy shop - a motivating reward loop.
What Kids Learn
Money math is uniquely valuable because it makes arithmetic immediately meaningful - every calculation has a real-world purpose children can understand and relate to. Counting mixed coins requires holding multiple addends in working memory (the value of each coin type) and adding them in any order, building flexible addition strategies. Making change introduces complementary subtraction - finding what must be added to a number to reach a target - a more sophisticated and useful form of subtraction thinking.
Money also provides a natural introduction to decimals: $1.35 is a concrete, understandable quantity before decimals are formally taught. Children who are comfortable with money calculations navigate decimal arithmetic far more confidently when it's introduced in later grades.
Tips for Parents
Give your child a real coin jar and let them count and sort the coins regularly. Let them pay for small purchases at shops and count the change themselves - this is far more motivating than any game. Play "store" at home where they're the shopkeeper and you're the customer, including making change. The connection between in-game money skills and real purchasing power is enormously motivating. If your country uses different currency denominations, check the game settings to switch to local denominations.
