How to Play

Missing Letter shows a word with one letter replaced by a blank - for example, C _ T or S _ N G. A picture clue shows what the word means. Choose the correct missing letter from four options (displayed as large, colorful buttons) to complete the word. The completed word is then read aloud so children hear the correct pronunciation.

The game is organized by word position: Level 1 focuses on missing middle vowels (the hardest position for young readers), Level 2 covers missing initial consonants, and Level 3 covers missing final consonants. An advanced mode removes the picture clue, relying purely on phonics knowledge. Complete 10 words per level to earn a star. Audio support throughout ensures children who can't yet read instructions independently can still play successfully.

What Kids Learn

Missing Letter directly targets phonemic awareness - the ability to hear and manipulate individual sounds within words. The missing-vowel format is particularly important because vowel sounds are the most complex and irregular aspect of English spelling: the letter A makes different sounds in "cat," "cake," "car," and "all." Repeated practice filling in vowels builds children's sensitivity to which vowel sound belongs in which position.

The picture-word connection in each puzzle reinforces the understanding that written words are representations of spoken words and real-world meanings - not arbitrary letter sequences. This meaning-sound-symbol connection is the foundation of reading comprehension. Children who understand that letters represent sounds are far better equipped to decode unfamiliar words independently than those who have simply memorized word shapes.

Tips for Parents

After your child completes a puzzle, say the word without the missing letter (just saying the surrounding sounds) and ask if they can hear the gap: "C__T - what sound is missing in the middle?" This oral phonemic awareness exercise deepens the game's benefit. For children working on reading at school, align the Missing Letter word sets with the phonics phase they're currently learning - this game is most effective as a complement to structured phonics instruction, not a replacement. Keep sessions short and positive: five to ten minutes, ending while they still want more.
