How to Play
In Letter Rain, letters fall from the top of the screen like raindrops. Your job is to press the matching key on your keyboard before each letter reaches the bottom. Catch a letter and it disappears in a splash of color; let one hit the ground and you lose a life. You start with three lives - lose them all and the game ends.
The game begins slowly, giving plenty of time to find each key, and gradually speeds up as your score increases. Early levels feature only the letters A through M (the home row and nearby keys), expanding to the full alphabet as you advance. A visual keyboard at the bottom of the screen highlights which key you need to press, helping beginners connect the on-screen letter to its keyboard position.
What Kids Learn
Letter Rain teaches the fundamental skill of keyboard mapping - knowing where each letter lives on the keyboard without looking down. The visual keyboard guide at the bottom provides scaffolded support that gradually trains children to look at the screen rather than their hands. This transition from "hunt and peck" to confident typing is one of the most impactful digital literacy skills children can develop.
Beyond keyboard mechanics, the game builds letter recognition speed and reinforces alphabetic knowledge. For early readers, the rapid identification of letter shapes under gentle time pressure strengthens the letter-recognition automaticity that supports reading fluency. The arcade format makes what could feel like a dry drill genuinely exciting.
Tips for Parents
Encourage your child to keep their eyes on the falling letters rather than looking down at the keyboard - even if it means missing a letter occasionally. The habit of looking at the screen is more valuable long-term than a high score. Proper posture matters too: feet flat, back straight, wrists relaxed. For very young children (ages 5-6), play together and take turns - this makes the early, slow levels more engaging. As your child improves, cover the on-screen keyboard guide with a piece of paper to challenge them to find keys without the visual aid.
