How to Play
Greater or Less presents two numbers side by side and asks: which is greater? Tap the greater number (or the lesser number, depending on the round's instruction). A large, friendly alligator mouth symbol (< >) snaps toward the bigger number - the "hungry alligator" memory trick - helping children remember which symbol means what.
Level 1 compares single-digit numbers (1-9), Level 2 compares two-digit numbers (10-99) where place value understanding is required, Level 3 introduces three-digit numbers, and Level 4 compares numbers in different forms (fractions, decimals, percentages) for the oldest players. A speed mode challenges children to compare numbers as quickly as possible, building comparison fluency. "True or False?" rounds show a completed comparison statement and ask if it's correct.
What Kids Learn
Number comparison is the conceptual bridge between counting (understanding individual numbers) and arithmetic (operating on numbers in relationship to each other). A child who can fluently compare any two numbers has a functional mental number line and understands magnitude - the relative "bigness" of numbers - in a way that makes arithmetic intuitive rather than arbitrary.
The two-digit comparison levels are especially important because they require place value reasoning: 73 is greater than 37 not because 7 > 3 in general, but because 7 tens is more than 3 tens. Children who compare two-digit numbers correctly using place value reasoning have demonstrated genuine understanding of the base-ten system - they are not just following a procedure but grasping the underlying structure.
Tips for Parents
The "hungry alligator" memory trick for the < and > symbols (the alligator always eats the bigger number) is beloved by children and widely effective - use it freely and consistently. Real-world comparison opportunities abound: which weighs more (compare bags of groceries), which is taller (compare family members), which costs more (compare prices in a shop). Always ask "How do you know?" after a comparison - the reasoning is more important than the answer, and articulating reasoning builds mathematical communication skills. Comparing two-digit numbers using price labels at a supermarket makes number comparison genuinely purposeful.
