How to Play

Double-Digit Addition presents two-digit addition problems on a colorful chalkboard-style display. Choose your mode: No Regrouping (sums that don't require carrying, e.g., 23 + 15) or With Regrouping (sums that require carrying, e.g., 47 + 38). For each problem, tap the answer boxes for the ones place and tens place separately, which reinforces understanding of place value.

The game includes a "Show Me" button that walks through the problem step by step with animated place value blocks - tens rods and ones cubes visually combine to show exactly how carrying works. Complete 10 questions per round and earn a certificate. Instant audio feedback celebrates correct answers and gently corrects mistakes with a brief explanation.

What Kids Learn

Double-digit addition is the first major milestone where place value becomes critical - children must understand that the "tens" and "ones" columns behave differently. This game builds that understanding explicitly through the visual place value blocks, connecting the abstract digits on the page to concrete quantities children can see and count.

Regrouping (carrying) is one of the most commonly misunderstood concepts in early arithmetic. By separating the ones and tens answer boxes and animating the carrying process, the game makes the underlying logic transparent. Children who understand why they carry - not just how - are far better prepared for subtraction with borrowing, multi-digit multiplication, and eventually algebra.

Tips for Parents

Base-ten blocks (available cheaply at most teaching supply stores) are a wonderful companion to this game. Have your child use physical blocks while playing on-screen to reinforce the connection between the visual model and the written calculation. For the regrouping mode, slow down and work through a few problems together verbally: "We have 17 ones - that's more than 10, so we group 10 of them into a new ten and carry it over." This narration builds mathematical language alongside conceptual understanding.
