How to Play
Decimal Dash has three types of questions that appear randomly. Compare questions ask which of two decimals is bigger. Smallest questions show three decimals and ask which comes first on a number line. Calculate questions give a simple decimal addition like 0.4 + 0.3 and ask you to choose the answer from four options.
After each answer, a number line from 0 to 1 appears with a coloured dot animating to the correct position - this helps you see where decimals sit relative to each other even when you get one wrong. The game has 12 questions and three lives.
What Kids Learn
Decimals are notoriously counterintuitive because children used to whole numbers often assume more digits means a bigger number - leading to the classic error of thinking 0.65 is larger than 0.7. The number line animation in Decimal Dash directly addresses this misconception by showing the actual position of each decimal.
Regular practice with decimal comparison builds the number sense needed for percentages, fractions-to-decimals conversion, and the kind of estimation used throughout science and everyday life. The three question types ensure children develop both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency.
Tips for Parents
Ask your child to explain why 0.7 is bigger than 0.65 in their own words after the number line animation. Articulating the reasoning - "0.7 is seven tenths and 0.65 is only sixty-five hundredths, which is less" - cements the concept far better than passively watching. Real-world contexts like prices (1.20 vs 0.99) and sports times (9.58 seconds vs 9.84 seconds) make decimals feel relevant and interesting.
